Desert Rose Blooms

Caravan pauses

For an hour or two

Gas station lights buzzing

Harsh fluorescent glower

The heat still eases

Like half seen snakes

Off the cracked concrete

Though the sun set hours before

I eye their leader

Sight focused

Crosshairs set

He’s smiling

Clearly laughing

Sonovabitch

I suddenly flash

Thought fast

Memory bright

Back to my wife

Pregnant

Face aglow

Flash again

Her neck bent all wrong

Belly torn

Spilled out

This man

Laughing like a hyena

Scavenger…

I’m back and ease my breath

Timing

Carefully

Breath in

Release

Squeeze

Thunder crack report

Rose bloom of viscera

I sigh

And sit back

Load another round

Ease barrel as chin rest

I’m coming home

Rosalyn

Ghastly Demise

Give up this

Desperate struggle

Niggling little parasite

“I am man!”

You boast

And brag

But look how fragile

How little

You truly are

With but a flick

Of the wrist

I can snap a spine

Or snap my fingers

And strip a soul

Though

In truth

This is not enough

Instead

I’ll give a glimpse

A fleeting sight

Of that which assaults

The obsidian doors of night

Which will one day consume all

With this merest fragment

Your mind will flee

And what life remains then

No I have killed

Quite effectively

You little worm

Why such lengths

For but a man

Well quite simply

I prefer to kill

Creatively

Fate (Return)

Gentle reminders

Passionate declarations

This blossoming thing

Glorious and splendid

Spills forth

Cup runneth over

Sweet nectar of love

Or

Something less wholesome

But just as sweet

Those words

Also sweet

Draw me out

Day in

Night out

The universe reminds

“She was meant for you

You were meant for her

This must be.”

Hunter Hunted

Its fur is dark and quick

Fleet feet fly over root tangle

So powerful and fast

But wait

What is that

Flash fang

Goring antler tears

Eyes, three, flash

The hunter is dead

And now sustains

Something far greater

Far older

Soul nearly ancient

Filet

Prepare the kill

Attentively

With the greatest care

I separate skin

From flesh

Connective tissue tossed in pot

Broth for later

The bones go in too

Oh but here I found

The choicest meat

A perfect slice

For my love to eat

This kill was slow

And lame

Almost too easy

But oh how I’ll savor the feast.

Church Grim

You know, they killed my momma

Burned her and buried her heart

Right beneath the church

No not for being a witch

They were making her a protector

She was made a Church Grim

I see her sometimes

Late at night

Pacing the perimeter

I call out but her eyes see through me

I am not that which concerns her…

So maybe I’ll make myself so…

Make a pact

Blood and pain

And dark whispered words…

Then she’ll see me

Then she’ll fight me

Then I’ll burn it all
