Mysterious Grandeur

I’ve always loved nature

“What was that?”

Its mysterious grandeur

“I think it’s coming closer…”

All of life’s wonder coalesced

“Jesus, it must be huge…”

In every sight beheld

“Oh my god!”

And in the face of such magnificence

“It got Mark!”

We find we are but cattle

“Jesus Christ it’s so fast!”

For something ravenous

“This was a mistake…”

And which has always preyed upon

And hungered for

Those fretting

Odd little things

Which call themselves Man

What Lies Within Delver’s Deep

They dared me to go

Down into Delver’s Deep

Where mom always warned against

A set of tunnels that twisted and turned

Curling into the depths

I told them I didn’t want to

That I was scared

And it was dark

But they pushed me

They pushed me in

And I fell

I tumbled

Broken

And battered

I came to rest

So far below

And with not a light all around

The pain was all consuming

Wracking my fragile body

But after a bit

My eyes adjusted

And here on the walls

Grew fungus

Translucent

And effluent

I tried to cry out

But all the sound that I made

Was a miserable and defeated wheeze

Yet

Something heard me

A scuttling in the distance

Above or below

Or even beside

I could not tell

But definitely moving closer

Grandma’s words came

Her warning of this place

“They shut it up for a reason

Things crawl down in there

Things that God’s light never touched

And they’re a terrible sight

Enough to kill a man”

My breathing was ragged

As the sound drew closer

I shut my eyes tight

Taking my grandma’s words

As literal advice

The steps grew faster

Heavy breath coming with

A scrabbling scuttling sound

It rounded whichever corner

And stopped at the sight of me

I whimpered

Eyes shut oh so tight

As it slowly paced closer

I could feel its hot breath

And smell fetid stink

As it leaned over my cowering form

Something thin

And bony

Grasped my ankle

And I was dragged screaming

Into the dark

Death March

His boot heels dragged

Through the lone dry grass

Sparse and brown from the wilting heat

.

His Planter’s hat

Wide brimmed and flat

Hid his eyes from the muddled hues

.

Above him cried

A vulture who eyed

The gait of a thing soon dead

.

How long he’d gone

Or what he had done

Few knew and yet fewer would tell

.

He did not curse his plight

As another man might

But prayed it be enough to atone

.

As the sun then set

And a pale man was met

He welcomed the stranger into his arms

.

He gasped a last breath

And walked calmly to Death

He fell down to the hard packed earth

.

The only witnesses here

Are two who men fear

The reaper and his malodorous bird

Minos Ascends

The sun was never again so bright

Never so effulgent

As the first time

I came up from our depths

The ominous

Ponderous creaking

As the lift was hoisted higher

And higher

I felt my heart beat quicken

What did it look like?

The sky

Clouds

Sun

Only ideas implanted in my head

Sounds that conveyed nothing

But wonder

And possibility

With a bang the lift stopped

The workers outside the cage

Tied down the rope to the wall

The door was opened

Beyond the gathered crowd I saw the illuminance

The otherworldly radiance spilling over their heads

I stepped

Uncertain

But excited

Onto the tunnel’s floor

The crowd embraced us and handed us head bands

Inset with dark glass

Old bottle bottoms

Lined with leather

We placed them over our eyes and were lead

Single file

Out of the mouth

Birthed into a world so vast

As to leave me awestruck

No god could have prepared me

Could have forewarned

Of this vastness

This beauty

I wept

“Minos, over here!”

Cried my father

Broad arms waving

Face aglow with love

A bear of a man

And one who I had not seen

Not held

In several years

We embraced

Warmth and sweat

But gloriously rejoined

He released me

And gestured to the horizon

Amber mountains stretched on

Unending

The sun beat down on me

Warming me more deeply

More completely

Than I’d ever felt before

And I knew then

I would never again

Love those caves

As I now loved this land

Minos had emerged

Minos had died

Minos was reborn

Kafka I Guess?

Circling round

You trudge onward

A spiral down

Looking ever forward

Life is a tale

That’s far more exciting

When told by those that failed

Than the fools left fighting

To clock into this horrid mess

Head down eyes unfocused

This nightmare almost Kafkaesque

Would you could be a locust

Nothing to see here

Just the death of another dream

To be forgotten our final fear

Less impact than a fly it seems

Clock out drive home

Mind begins to wander

To escape the rock and snowy loam

See the sky the stars and their wonder

Red lights warning flash

You brake and come to halt

Inside you something breaks with a crash

Teeth grinding roar rising ready to assault

A scream so primal

Teeth bared with danger

Your whole life, a trifle

The world echoes this anger

You get home

Cat awaiting you

Television helps inspire, some

Reminding that we are those happy few

But

But there’s something stuck now

A dark thing hunched and growling

TASTE THE FLESH OF A SOW

HEAD BACK AND HOWLING

No

Now calm deep breath

You lay your head back

No time for that much death

It’s time to hit the sack

Powerful

You thought I’d die

I’d never make it without you

But look now upon me

In all my terrible glory

I’d rend you limb from limb

Consume your every fiber

For what you did to me

You taught me I was weak

Did you do that

So I’d rely on you

Or so I would never find

Just how powerful I am…

Just how weak you are?

Hunter Hunted

Its fur is dark and quick

Fleet feet fly over root tangle

So powerful and fast

But wait

What is that

Flash fang

Goring antler tears

Eyes, three, flash

The hunter is dead

And now sustains

Something far greater

Far older

Soul nearly ancient

Filet

Prepare the kill

Attentively

With the greatest care

I separate skin

From flesh

Connective tissue tossed in pot

Broth for later

The bones go in too

Oh but here I found

The choicest meat

A perfect slice

For my love to eat

This kill was slow

And lame

Almost too easy

But oh how I’ll savor the feast.
